Prairie Winter Cleaning Tips for Saskatoon Homes

Saskatoon winters are a special challenge. Salt-crusted boots, dry heated air, sealed-up windows, and seven months of "good enough" cleaning. Here's how to keep your home livable through the long prairie winter.

The Boot Tray Strategy

Salt and slush will destroy your entryway floor if you let it. Set up a serious boot zone:

  • Heavy-duty boot tray (the deeper the better)
  • Old towel or absorbent mat
  • Daily emptying (slush evaporates indoors and damages floors)
  • Weekly clean of the tray itself with vinegar to remove salt buildup

De-Salt Your Floors Weekly

Salt residue is alkaline and damages floor finishes. Wipe entry-area floors weekly with:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 squirt dish soap

The vinegar neutralizes salt residue.

Combat Dry Indoor Air

Saskatoon winters can drop indoor humidity to 15%. That dries out wood floors, furniture, and your sinuses. A humidifier helps, but so does:

  • Houseplants (they release moisture)
  • Drying laundry on a rack indoors
  • Leaving the dishwasher cracked open after the cycle
  • Showering with the bathroom door open

Window Maintenance

Condensation collects on windows in winter and can grow mould. Wipe sills weekly. If you see frost forming on the interior, your home humidity is too high — lower it before mould develops.

HVAC Filter Schedule

Furnace runs constantly in Saskatoon winters — change filters more often than usual. Every 30 days during heating season is appropriate for most homes.

Combat Static

Dry winter air = static everywhere = more dust clinging to everything. Anti-static dryer sheets used as dusters work surprisingly well on screens and electronics.

Garage Floor Salt Stains

The white salt crust on garage concrete? Vinegar straight (no dilution), poured on, scrubbed with a stiff brush, rinsed. Do this in late spring when temperatures allow.

Winter Bedding

Wash duvets and heavy blankets in late fall before the cold sets in. Dust mites thrive in winter bedding.

Prepare for Spring

By March, most homes desperately need a deep reset. Spring deep cleans are our busiest service from late March through May.

Skip the Winter Slog

Recurring cleaning service is most popular in winter for exactly these reasons. We handle the salt, slush, and dust so you can focus on staying warm. Call 306-700-6576.
