How to Remove Carpet Stains (Even Old Ones)
Every Saskatoon home has a few carpet stains hidden behind furniture. Some are old wine spills from a New Year's Eve you barely remember. Some are pet accidents. Some are mystery stains that appeared one day. Most of them can come out — if you use the right method.
The Golden Rule: Blot, Don't Rub
Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into carpet fibres and frays them. Always blot from the outside of the stain toward the centre using a clean white cloth.
Coffee or Tea
Mix 1 tablespoon white vinegar + 1 tablespoon dish soap + 2 cups warm water. Blot the stain with this mixture, then blot with plain water. Repeat as needed.
Red Wine
If fresh: blot up as much as possible, pour table salt over it, let sit 10 minutes, vacuum. Then apply the vinegar/dish-soap solution above. If old: hydrogen peroxide + dish soap (test on a hidden spot first — can lighten some carpets).
Pet Urine
This needs enzyme cleaner. Regular cleaners don't break down the proteins that make the smell persist. Saturate the spot, follow product directions, blot dry. Skipping enzyme cleaner means the smell — and re-marking by pets — comes back.
Blood
Cold water only. Hot water sets blood stains. Blot with cold water, then apply hydrogen peroxide if needed. Test on hidden area first.
Grease & Oil
Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch heavily, let sit 15 minutes to absorb, vacuum. Then apply dish soap directly (it's an emulsifier — designed to break down grease). Blot with warm water.
Mud
Wait until it's dry. Then scrape gently with a butter knife and vacuum. Wet mud spreads. Dry mud lifts cleanly.
Ink
Rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Blot, don't rub. Test on hidden area first.
Crayon
Place a paper towel over the crayon mark and run a warm iron over it (low setting). The crayon transfers to the paper towel. Repeat until clean.
Mystery Stains
Start with the vinegar/dish-soap/warm-water solution. It handles 80% of unknown stains safely.
When to Call a Pro
If a stain has soaked through to the carpet pad, or covers a large area, professional carpet cleaning (subcontracted by us) usually beats DIY. Steam extraction removes far more than spot-cleaning ever can.
