Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products That Actually Work

"Eco-friendly" used to mean "smells nice but won't clean anything." Not anymore. The new generation of plant-based cleaners cuts through grime as well as chemical alternatives — if you know which ones to pick.

The Four Ingredients That Clean Almost Anything

1. White Vinegar

The undisputed king of natural cleaners. Cuts through mineral deposits, soap scum, glass streaks, and odours. Mix 1:1 with water in a spray bottle for everyday use. Avoid on: natural stone (marble, granite), waxed wood, and rubber gaskets.

2. Baking Soda

A mild abrasive that's safe on most surfaces. Makes a paste for tough stains, deodorizes anything, and reacts with vinegar to lift grime. Keep a box open in the fridge.

3. Castile Soap

Plant-based concentrated soap (Dr. Bronner's is the famous brand). A few drops in water makes a powerful all-purpose cleaner. Skip with vinegar though — they neutralize each other.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)

Gentle bleaching alternative. Cleans grout, removes blood and red wine stains, and sanitizes cutting boards.

Recipes That Work

All-Purpose Spray: 1 cup water, 1 cup vinegar, 10 drops essential oil (lemon, tea tree, or lavender).

Tub & Tile Scrub: 1 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup liquid castile soap. Make a paste, apply, scrub.

Glass Cleaner: 2 cups water, 1/4 cup vinegar, 1 tbsp cornstarch (the secret — prevents streaks).

Wood Floor Cleaner: 1 gallon warm water, 1/4 cup castile soap, 1/2 cup white vinegar. (Wring mop nearly dry.)

Toilet Cleaner: 1/2 cup baking soda, 1 cup vinegar. Pour in, let foam, scrub, flush.

Brands We Recommend

If DIY isn't your thing, these brands are widely available in Saskatoon (Co-op, Real Canadian Superstore, Bulk Barn for refills):

  • Attitude (Canadian-made, EcoLogo certified)
  • Method
  • Dr. Bronner's
  • Mrs. Meyer's (better scents than most)
  • Nature Clean (Canadian)

What to Avoid

"Greenwashing" is rampant. Look for third-party certifications: EcoLogo, Green Seal, EWG Verified. Avoid products with "fragrance" listed without specifics — that's usually a cover for unlisted chemicals.

What We Use

Our cleaners default to plant-based products on every Saskatoon home we visit — safe for kids, pets, and our prairie environment. Call 306-700-6576 to book a clean.
