Pet-Friendly Cleaning Tips for Saskatoon Homes
If you've got pets, cleaning is a different game. Their nose-to-the-floor lifestyle means they're exposed to whatever residue you leave behind. Here's how to keep your Saskatoon home clean and your pets safe.
Products to Avoid (Toxic to Pets)
- Bleach — lung and skin irritant for animals
- Ammonia — especially harmful to cats and birds
- Phenols (found in Pine-Sol, Lysol) — toxic to cats
- Essential oils — tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus — toxic to cats and dogs
- Glycol ethers — common in glass cleaners
Safe Cleaners
- White vinegar (diluted)
- Baking soda
- Castile soap (unscented or with vet-safe scents only)
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Enzyme cleaners (look for "pet-safe" on label)
Pet-Hair Management
Saskatoon winters mean pets shed indoors all season. Strategies that work:
- Rubber gloves — damp rubber glove + couch = pet hair magnet
- Squeegee on carpet — sounds weird; works incredibly well
- Vacuum 2-3x/week minimum with a pet-specific vacuum (the brush roll matters)
- Brush your pets outside — cuts indoor shedding by 50%+
- Wash pet bedding weekly — cold water, scent-free detergent
Removing Pet Stains and Smells
Don't use ammonia-based cleaners on pet urine — ammonia is a component of urine, so it tells your pet "this is the right spot to mark."
Use enzyme cleaner. Soak the spot, let it work for 15+ minutes, blot dry. Enzyme cleaners break down the proteins that other cleaners just mask.
Pet Food Areas
Pet food bowls collect bacteria fast. Wash daily with hot soapy water (yes, daily). Wipe the surrounding area — that's where the bacterial spread happens.
Litter Box Cleaning
Scoop daily, full clean weekly. Wash with mild dish soap only — never scented or bleach-based cleaners. The litter box also benefits from a thin layer of baking soda under fresh litter for odour control.
Keep Floors Pet-Safe
Wood, tile, and laminate floors stay safest with a 1:1 vinegar-water mix or castile-soap solution. Avoid floor cleaners with "wax" or "shine" boosters — many are toxic to pets who lick their paws.
Allergies (Yours, Not Theirs)
If your family has pet allergies, focus on dust, dander, and saliva proteins. HEPA-filter vacuums make a huge difference. Wipe walls and baseboards monthly — dander accumulates there.
